Coin Melt Value Calculator

Calculate standard weight, fineness, fine silver or gold content, and estimated melt value in GBP, USD and EUR for British coins by denomination and year.

About this calculator

This tool estimates the intrinsic bullion value of selected British coins using their standard specifications and the current spot price of silver or gold. Enter a denomination, year, and quantity to see the coin’s weight, fineness, fine metal content, and approximate melt value.

Important: melt value is not the same as collector value. Rare dates, better grades, proofs, patterns, and desirable varieties may be worth significantly more than bullion content alone.

Calculate coin metal content

Notes and assumptions

  • Standard circulation specifications are used for the selected denomination and year.
  • Some proofs, patterns, commemoratives, and special issues may differ from normal circulation standards.
  • British silver denominations commonly changed from .925 silver to .500 silver in 1920, and later lost silver content altogether.
  • Values shown are estimates and will move with the live gold or silver price.

Frequently asked questions

Does melt value equal coin value?

No. Melt value only reflects the bullion content of the coin. Many British coins trade well above melt because of rarity, demand, grade, provenance, or variety status.

Why does the year matter?

The metal content of many denominations changed over time. A shilling from one period may contain substantially more silver than a later example of the same denomination.

Can I use this for sovereigns?

Yes. Sovereigns and half sovereigns are ideal for this calculator because their standard gold content is well defined and closely tied to bullion value.
